All-optical measurement of nuclear-spin relaxation

چکیده
Nuclear-spin relaxation rates are usually measured by pulsed radio frequency excitation of nuclear-spin transitions. When the number of spins is too small for direct detection with conventional nuclear-magneticresonance spectrometers, pulsed excitation may be combined with optical detection of the nuclear spins for increased sensitivity. Here we demonstrate that such measurements can also be done purely optically, without radio frequency fields. This is achieved by preparing nonthermal populations by optical hole-burning and time-resolved probing of the populations as a function of the decay time. Measurements of the nuclear-spin relaxation of Pr in the electronic ground state of Pr:YAlO3 show that the relaxation rates for the three transitions differ by a factor of 3.

Optically induced dynamic nuclear spin polarisation in diamond
The sensitivity of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) depends strongly on nuclear spin polarisation and, motivated by this observation, dynamical nuclear spin polarisation has recently been applied to enhance MRI protocols (Kurhanewicz, J., et al., Neoplasia 13, 81 (2011)). Nuclear spins associated with the C carbon isotope (nuclear spin I = 1/2) in diamond possess uniquely long spin lattice rela...
متن کاملControlling the nuclear polarization in quantum dots using optical pulse shape with a modest bandwidth
We show that detuned optical pulse trains with a modest spectral width can polarize nuclear spins in indium arsenide quantum dots. The pulse bandwidth is large enough to excite a coherent superposition of both electron spin eigenstates in these negatively charged dots but narrow enough to give partial spectral selectivity between the eigenstates. The coherent precession of electron spin states ...
متن کاملAll-optical initialization, readout, and coherent preparation of single silicon-vacancy spins in diamond.
The silicon-vacancy (SiV-) color center in diamond has attracted attention because of its unique optical properties. It exhibits spectral stability and indistinguishability that facilitate efficient generation of photons capable of demonstrating quantum interference. Here we show optical initialization and readout of electronic spin in a single SiV- center with a spin relaxation time of T1=2.4±...
متن کاملObservation of zero-point quantum fluctuations of a single-molecule magnet through the relaxation of its nuclear spin bath.
A single-molecule magnet placed in a magnetic field perpendicular to its anisotropy axis can be truncated to an effective two-level system, with easily tunable energy splitting. The quantum coherence of the molecular spin is largely determined by the dynamics of the surrounding nuclear spin bath. Here we report the measurement of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1n in a single crysta...
متن کاملOptical Pumping
Optical pumping uses light to affect the internal degrees of freedom of a sample of atoms in a vapor. These internal degrees of freedom are angular momentum states of the atomic ground state, which are populated when light is absorbed and emitted. This experiment reveals many phenomena of quantum mechanics including angular momentum selection rules, the density matrix, and resonance. Optical pu...
